I'm working on a historical novel, and I was wondering if anyone knows of any images of effigies of black men hung as a means of intimidation. That is, not actual lynching but the hanging of large stuffed dolls to send a threatening message.
Secondly, were lynch victims ever hung inside a burlap sack?

| i know of one, it was of a black santa claus hung on a noose in a state office. |

Thank you, B-Mor7, for your reply. Do you have any more specific details of the incident?
In terms of the plot of the novel I'm working on, my main question would be if such effigies were ever sufficiently life-like that someone--seeing it in the dark, with only a quick glance--might believe it to be an actual person. I was thinking of something similar to a stuffed scarecrow.
