Frances Cress Welsing (1991) reveals that “the major percentage of Black males who have been lynched...have had their genitals attacked, removed and taken away by white males (ie., carried away with them on their person)....this behavior is interpreted as fear of Black male genitalia. Thus, it must be attacked and destroyed, but also there is envy and a desire for possession of the same” ( p. 97). W.E.B. DuBois similarly observed that after Sam Hose was lynched, the African was roasted and “the white mob of two thousand men, women, and children fought over pieces of his flesh for souvenirs” (Lewis, 1993, p. 226). Another example was the black Virginian freedom fighter Nat Turner whose lynched corpse was also mutilated by white psychopathic executioners. After being hanged from a tree, his body was delivered to anatomists who excoriated it and made grease of the flesh. Although what was done with the grease is unknown, a money purse was made of Turner’s skin and his skeleton was for many years in the possession of a doctor by the name of Massenberg (Drewry, 1900).
