I think the Flash movie on here is important, but I worry that this is thought of as a closed chapter. We have to recall these people, the victims as well as the perpetrators, when we see the pictures from Abu Ghraib. What did the lynchers claim to be protecting when they terrorized and murdered? Who makes similar claims today? The line of "without sanctuary" - who is granted no sanctuary today?
Because it is not enough to be aghast or to mourn. We owe, all of us, a debt to those lynched. It is not a debt that can be settled by concern or pity. This is an insult to those killed. It cannot be settled in memory, memorializing or speaking against the perpetrators long dead. It must be settled through work and deed. We must ask who does this terror serve? What system? And then we must work against that system. That system can be seen at in each of those pictures, but whereas the pictures are getting old and tattered, the system is stronger and crueler today.
