I just watched the movie and really thought how sad it was with the swarms of people that come out to see this. Even with the "fair punishments" we give out today, usually only the family and close friends of those involved in the decision come to witness the punishment. With the mobs of people that came out to see these hangings, many of which were not even justified, it is sad to see it was more of an "event" then a act of justice.
