I could not believe what I saw in those photos. You can read all about it, but until you see the pictures of these lynchings it doesn't really sink in. It's just unimaginable what white people did to the blacks, their fellow man. The worst parts of the pictures were the large gathering of people taking pride in the kill. It's absolutly sickening thinking my ancestors took part in these.
The thing that bothers me the most was that only 3 white were executed for murdering black people (Wells, Ida). It sure looks like there were more than 3 white men in those pictures. Reconstruction failed at this point. They allowed blacks to vote, but didn't protect them from violence (until federal troops finally arrived). Allowing blacks to vote only further scared the whites who feared "black domination". The whites solution to this was frequently murdering black leaders and destroying black establishments.
Racism still exists today, but not nearly as horrific as in the past. It's hard to detect today because people don't proclaim it because now-a-days it is severly frowned upon. It's unimaginable if the past were to repeat itself. It really looked like hell on earth. |
