After viewing this short movie, it became apparent to me how "real" these lynchings actually were, yet I also realized how insignificant they may have seemed at the time. When I learned about the lynching of Emit Till a few years ago, it seemed like such a big deal and a very serious event, but after viewing that movie, it seems like Emit was probably only one of hundreds of African Americans lynched because of their ethnicity.
The part of this movie that probably bothered me the most was the postcards that had pictures of lynched African Americans. It was almost as if the people who had sent the postcards (probably white supremacists) were taking pride in these brutal occurences which is morally wrong regardless of the time period. I understand today that a lynching would have quite the impact on society and those responsible for the lynching would face quite the consequence, but at the time of most of these lynchings, not much was actually thought of them...this really goes to show how much times have changed. |
