Dear All
I wonder if anyone has any information on similar photographs from Africa, particularly the subcontinent of Southern Africa. I am thinking, in particular, of the frontispiece to Olive Schreiner's novel Trooper Peter Halket which was a photograph of three men hanged on a hanging tree in present day Zimbabwe. The first edition of the text (1897) carried this frontispiece, which was subsequently banned. I'm wondering whether this is simply coincidence (though it's a little earlier than many of the photographs on Without Sanctuary), or whether there wasn't some kind of trans-Atlantic 'trend' developing? If anyone knows anything about this, I wonder if you could contact me at aharris@languages.wits.ac.za
many thanks and I look forward to your responses.
